| *Rohwer credits U-130 with attacking HALO with gunfire on 27 Jan but this seems extremely doubtful since there is no mention of the attack in the KTB and Kals made no such claim. | ||||||
| Note: The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website. The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank. | ||||||
Significant Events |
||
| Operations | ||
| 2 Jan | 21.35 | U-130's Operations Order gave CB 60 as initial Approach Point which would have brought the boat to the east coast of the US. On 2 Jan BdU directed U-109, U-130 and U-43 (then operating south of Iceland) to proceed to BC 5889 for an operation off Newfoundland. |
| 7 Jan | 13.58 | U-109 and U-130 were ordered to make for BC 47 & 71 and BC 74 & 77 respectively for operations off Halifax. |
| 8 Jan | 12.00 | Boats bound for North American waters were given the following operations areas and were to form Group Paukenschlag (Drumbeat): |
| U 66 - CA 79, 97, DC 12-13; U 123 - CA 28, 29, 52, 53 | ||
| U 125 - CA 38, 59, 62, 63; U 109 area between points BA 9633 - CB 1577 - BB 7355 - BB 8575. | ||
| U 130 - BB 51, 52, 54, 55, 57, 58. | ||
| U-109 and U-130 were to be in their operations areas on 13 January. | ||
| 12 Jan | 12.00 | U-130 reached her operations area and initially patrolled the Sydney-Cape Race route. |
| The boat sank two ships in the Cabot Strait. Extreme cold weather hampered operations. | ||
| 18 Jan | 11.53 | BdU authorized U-130 to shift operations area to the US east coast between Norfolk and Barnegat. Kals did so because traffic was sparse, weather was unfavorable and the area heavily patrolled by fast aircraft. U-130 sank one ship enroute to the new area and two ships once there. |
| 19 Jan | 05.05 | Kals informed BdU that he was shifting operations area to CA 54 and 57. |
| 27 Jan | 2400 | BdU ordered U-130 to to meet U-109 to transfer 20 cbm of fuel in CB 4845 on 29 Jan at 20.00. The boats finally met on 6 February at 22.50. |
| 9 Feb | 00.00 | U-130 searched unsuccessfully for steamers dispersed from a convoy reported by Forster. |
| 18 Feb | 15.00 | U-130 met U-587 to receive 5 rescued fliers. |
| Engineering | ||
| 18 Jan | 01.09 | Due to icing of the diesel air intake valve about 8 tons of water entered the boat, causing it to touch the bottom in A -32 meters. Later at 12.30 the aft dive planes jammed at full up during a crash dive, apparently damaged by contact with the bottom. |
| 31 Jan | 00.44 | Short circuits were detected in 5 of 8 G7e torpedoes. |
| 8 Feb | 11.45 | The negative buoyancy tank is discovered to be flooding itself. |

After 54 seconds (840 meters) hit under the foremost hatches. I can now calmly ascertain that it is a big steamer of about 7000 GRT. Looks exactly like a British steamer of the Holt-Line (ADRASTUS and the like, Gröner 1940, page 275). |

Missed. Steamer has seen me despite the relatively great distance and dark night due to the ice on our deck and slowed down, that’s why the torpedoes missed. |

Just when I wanted to turn to starboard to possibly fire the stern tubes, a destroyer (American Craven class) is sighted to port abeam about 300 meters away. He is heading towards me at high speed. I turn the boat around with utmost speed ahead against utmost speed astern, which lets him pass about 10 meters behind my stern. |
|||||
| Crash-dive. While we are jumping through the hatch a second destroyer appears behind the stern of the steamer. Due to icing of the diesel air intake valve about 8 tons of water enters the boat, causing it to touch the bottom (water depth A -32 meters). At first I remain in this position, despite the boat skidding on the rocks unpleasantly and turned off everything. The destroyers do nothing. Analysis of the situation off the American coast between Sandy Hook and Chesapeake Bay |
|||||
| 1.) Very active shipping at the 20-meter line along the coast. One has to reckon with escorts guarding this route. Besides that the ships are en route with lights showing. | |||||
| 2.) Some of the bigger vessels, especially tankers, are reluctant to get closer than the 30-meter line due to the attitude of the merchant mariners. They can be met at average intervals at the 30 and 35-meter lines, some of them darkened. No escorts noticed. | |||||
| 3.) Observed average surveillance by warships on the 80meter line. Several times we could hear ships searching with Asdic in this area. | |||||
| 4.) No mine barrages detected outside of the 30-meter line. | |||||

The fliers told us that they were on a reconnaissance flight on the afternoon of 13 February and sighted a three-masted sailing vessel with auxiliary engine in about BE 67. The commander decided not to use bombs and to attack with machine guns. During the first approach they were hit by heavy fire. The commander was killed immediately and they had to ditch. The five survivors managed to board a dinghy and drifted for 2½ days. |

Special remarks: |
|||||
| 1.) It is recommended that the boats going to America are equipped with all upper deck containers for torpedoes. Reload is possible during all seasons. | |||||
| 2.) It is furthermore recommended to use the boats that are out of torpedoes, more than it is done now to transfer fuel to other boats. Where required even to offer fuel by themselves to neighboring boats and to watch for or to shadow targets in their patrol areas until the fuel can be transferred. | |||||
| 3.) I think it is necessary to equip all boats with a device to throw lines. | |||||
| 4.) This temporary version of the close detection gear (A.E.G.) is only a surplus weight aboard. It has a fixed range of 50 meters. | |||||

| In November 1941 a radio operator was sent to the company with the defective gear, but he was sent away because “It is not the final version of the detection gear”. | |||||
| 5.) A portion of the canned bread stored in the diesel bilge was contaminated because the cans were crimped instead of brazed. | |||||
The medical condition of the crew was good, despite the cold in the first patrol area (Cabot Strait) against which the crew was ill-equipped. One man had to lie down for 45 days due to an injury to his tibia. |
|||||
Distance travelled: 8520 nm |
|||||
| Duration of the patrol: 61 days | |||||
| Success: 4 loaded tankers, one of them possibly sunk and an empty freighter for a total of 38,248 grt. | |||||
