| Note: The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website. The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank. | ||||||
Significant Events |
||
| Operations | ||
| 12 Jun | 14.00 | U-172 was to refuel from U-118 on 12 Jun but the boat found the meeting place to be occupied by carrier-based aircraft. At 16.00 depth charge explosions were heard related to the destruction of U-118. The boat moved off to the south. |
| 15 Jun | 06.24 | The loss of U-118 forced BdU to use U-530 as a tanker. Refueling with U-530 was completed on 16 June. |
| 28 Jun | 04.43 | The boat sank VERNON CITY misidentifying it as CORNISH CITY. |
| 30 Jun - 4 Aug | U-172 entered her operations area off the coast of Brazil including the harbors of Salvador (Bahia) and Rio de Janeiro. The boat sank three ships there before being ordered to return on 4 Aug with 63 cbm. | |
| 7 Aug | 16.00 | U-172 was ordered to meet with U-185 and the damaged U-604 to take over half of the crew. |
| 11 Aug | 18.40 | U-172 met U-185 and U-604 taking over 9 cbm fuel, provisions and equipment. |
| 11 Aug | 20.04 | Before the crew could be taken over a Liberator aircraft attacked, straddling U-172 and U-604 which were still connected. Matr.Ob.Gefr. Schiemann was killed and two others wounded. U-172 rudder was jammed 10° to port. The boat was forced to submerge to avoid ramming U-185. Several ballast tanks were cracked and the gyro compass and magnetic compass were temporarily out of service. U-604's crew was taken over by U-185 and U-604 scuttled. |
| 14 Aug | 11.13 | U-172 met U-185 and half of U-604's crew was transferred to U-172. |
| 25 Aug | 09.32 | U-172 met U-847 and is supplied for economical return. |
| 28 Aug | 14.04 | U-172 was warned of enemy activity on the Peining route. |
| 31 Aug | 18.35 | U-172 was advised the Peining route was clear for her return. |
| Engineering | ||
| 2 Jun | 16.45 | After an attack by aircraft an air vent line of tube IV leaked, the defective spot was in ballast tank 8. As a result, the torpedo tube was exposed to outside sea pressure, thus the ability to dive deep was restricted. The line was flanged at the pressure hull, sealed in the tube by a bronze cone but offered no absolute safety. |
| 14 June | 23.15 - 00.30 | The starboard outer exhaust valve was repaired. |
| 28 Jun | 00.00 | Bow cap of tube V could not be opened or closed. |
28 Jun 11 Jul |
00.00 01.15 | U-172 was equipped with a FuMO 30 Radar set which employed a small turnable frame aerial with only 2x4 dipoles - 82 cm wavelength (formerly designated FuMG 42 gU). In the KTB the boat refers to the radar as Fu.M.G. and notes on 28 Jun that attempts to get fixes were unsuccessful, the same on 11 Jul. |
| 8 Jul | 21.00-22.00 | The exhaust valve was repaired. |
| 24 Jul | 08.00 | Main rudder motor failed, maneuvering was by hand steering gear until repairs were completed at 13.45. |
| 28 Jul | 22.20-00.10 | The exhaust valve was repaired. |

Matr.Ob.Gefr. Schiemann killed in action by heart and neck shots while removing the muzzle plug of the 105 mm deck gun on the forecastle. |
|||||
| 20.06 | Second approach-run steep from portside ahead. Boat is increasing speed. Altitude 20 meters, two depth charges, one of them detonates 5 meters away behind the stern, at a depth of about 20 meters. Strafing fire. Boat makes a leap forward. |
||||
Matr.Ob.Gefr. Wagner seriously wounded by a shot in the chest and a grazing shot in the arm, Matr.Ob.Gefr. Meiβner slightly wounded at the eye by splinters. |
|||||
Several breakdowns. Rudder jammed to port at 10°. |
|||||
All boats are zigzagging at full speed one around the other giving protection to each other. |
|||||
In doing so, I'm continuously in ramming position with U-185, which has not the slightest notion of my rudder failure. |
|||||
| Both machineguns out of action. The LI reports the boat ready for diving. | |||||
