Key and notes to translated message forms

With great appreciation to cryptology historian/researcher Mr. Ralph Erskine

Date of message US Navy Security Classification (unknown)

German date/time of transmission/serial # (Serial # was allocated when signal was being sent by shore station.  A different serial # was given for each radio circuit (eg. Series 1 or 4, etc)) Group count (number of four letter cipher groups in original German signal) Cipher indicator group showing which cipher was being used ( eg. Triton (Shark) or Bertok) and the group for obtaining message setting (starting position of rotor for that message) Allied name assigned to U-boat radio circuit   Series’ 1, 2 3, etc. were allied designations for various U-boat radio circuits. The circuits included the Ubootsküstenschaltung (for the Bay of Biscay and the northern approaches to the North Atlantic ), Irland (for U-boats in the north and middle Atlantic ), Amerika (for those in the north western Atlantic, central Atlantic and South American coast), Afrika (for the Indian Ocean ), and Diana and Hubertus.  From time to time they were expanded and renamed (eg. Amerika I and II ).

REF 4 SKL 22251 CONF:

IN E 1439 CONF IT WAS REQUESTED THAT "KIRSCHBLUETE" BE PUT INTO EFFECT AS OF 1/8.  SINCE IT APPEARS FROM 4 SKL 21641 CONF THAT IT SHOULD BE MADE EFFECTIVE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE IT WAS PUT INTO EFFECT BEGINNING 1/8 WITHOUT WAITING FOR AN ANSWER TO E 1439 CONF.

MEANWHILE PENANG REPORTS:  AFTER "TAIFUN" WENT INTO EFFECT NEW KIRSCHBLUETE BECAME URGENTLY NEEDED.  REQUEST PERMISSION TO PUT NEW KIRSCHBLUETE INTO EFFECT ON ORDERS FROM HERE, SICE GERMANY IS NOT IN A POSITION TO BE WELL INFORMED IN ALL DETAILS ABOUT CONDITIONS HERE.  DIFFICULTIES HAVE NOT ALL BEEN ELIMINATED BY TAIFUN; NEW KIRSCHBLUETE IS ESSENTIAL IN CONJUNCTION WITH IT; APRIL 1944 EDITION IN OUR OPINION IS NOT ADEQUATE.  SETTING UP RADIO INSTEUCTION HERE IS ON BASIS OF EXPERIENCES OF LAST FEW MONTHS AND AFTER REVIEWING PROPOSALS MADE BY RADIO OFFICERS FORMERLY OF "BRAKE", PENANG, SHONAN, AND THE STATION CONTROL OFFICER FROM U-BOAS.  PROPOSAL ON NEW KIRSCHBLUETE, WITH DETAILED OPINIONS, IS ALREADY EN ROUTE ABOARD ALBRECHT ((1062)).

1)  PASSIVE PROCEDURE OF CO (ALLOWING U/B TO DRIFT FOR 68 HOURS WITHOUT SCHNORCHELING) AFTER A/C ATTACK ON 3/10 WAS VERY INAPPROPRIATE.  IN AREAS THAT ARE FAR MORE STRONGLY PATROLLED. FOR EXAMPLE IN THE CHANNEL, U/B'S SCHNORCHEL SOMETIMES BY DAY WITHOUT BEING SPOTTED.  INDOCTRINATION CONCERNING CURRENT ORDER NR 20 IS NECESSARY.
ALBRECHT ((1062)) HAD WITH GREAT PROBABILITY BEEN LOCATED ((BY RADAR GEORTET)) ON THE SURFACE, AND DESTROYED BY CARRIER A/C, POSSIBLY DAYS BEFORE.

NOTE:  Burghagen reached Djkarta therefore it must heve been Albrecht who was sunk.  Burghagen reports he went to 11.33 N, - 34.39 W. without provisioning Albrecht.  Surfaced in 11.33N - 34.39W.  Albrecht not there.  Large oil slick off starboard bow and to port.  At 2240 attacking run by Suka and shot it down.  DD with saws and continuous D/C, A/C bombs.  (PPA 06 31 Dec; PPA 04 21 Dec. 1944)
