POWs aboard USS Bogue

POWs are transferred to USS Bogue from the USS Jannssen by breaches buoy and are escorted to the hangar deck.

POWs aboard Bogue - The POW on the right is believed to be the sailor from whom whose clothing two photographs were taken (see Photographs Taken from POWs on the U-1229 page).

Leutnant Oskar Mantel (Propagandamann) was a spy to be landed in the U.S. - Mantel was 40 years old and spoke very good English. Before the war he was a resident of New York City for a period of twelve years. He was carrying a large sum of U.S. currency when he was rescued.
