U-422 was sunk by aircraft of VC-9 from USS Card, October 4, 1943
Four U-boats were present at the scene of this attack: U-460 (type XIV supply U-Boat) and three type VIIC boats (U-264 which was refueling alongside, U-455 and U-422).  U-264 dove and escaped but was damaged in another attack by VC-9 aircraft later the same day.  U-455 dove and escaped.   U-460 dove and apparently escaped but did not report to Control after this attack.  Her loss may have been through other causes such as a diving accident.  U-422 was sunk by a Mk-24 torpedo dropped by LTJG Stern.
