PHOTOGRAPHS
 
     
          Photographs taken by Lt. (jg) Thompson at scene of, and about three hours after, attack by Lt. (jg) Sallenger and Ensign Sprague.  Lt. Sallenger and his turret gunner were in their rubber raft a few miles away when Lt. (jg) Thompson took these pictures, but were unable to attack his attention.  
     
 
(1) Oil slick, apparently very light, near which was observed fluorescein sea marker covering about same area as those attached to pilot's life jackets.
   
(2) One of the two large, fresh oil slicks, quite similar in shape, as seen in next photograph.
   
(3) Second of large heavy slicks in area.
   
(4) One of several photographs of a light oil streak in area, similar to moving slick left by damaged submarine under way.
   
(5) U-shaped slick also found in vicinity, and believed characteristic of slick left by submarines refueling.
