Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

[The reason for the quad no longer being used is unclear]

Aircraft attacking out of the sun sector bearing 250°T, range about 5000 meters.  Sighted by lookout too late.  MG ready.  Turned away hard, used antiaircraft weapons, port twin shots 80 well placed rounds at the target.  No effect observed.  The quadruple was no longer used.  Aircraft shot with on board weapons and threw 4 bombs that entered the water on the starboard side.  No particular effect.

21.08   As aircraft fly's by - Crash dive!  Went to depth A +20 meters.  At about 80 meters one depth charge behind the boat.
In the sound gear propeller sounds.
21.33   Went to periscope depth.  A destroyer (Churchill Class) comes in sight in the periscope at about 6-8000 meters, has target angle 0°.  Initiated attack with T V.
    21.51 AK 0218 Shot from Tube II (T V) range = 1500 meters, bow left target angle 60°, target speed = 12 knots, depth = 4 meters.
After shooting went to depth 2A, after 2 minutes 30 seconds a loud torpedo detonation (a bright and a dull bang).  Thereafter very loud detonation.  Probably the detonation of several depth charges at the same time, then some individual detonations.  Propeller sounds ceased.
22.30   At periscope depth.  Beginning of twilight.  Destroyer lies stopped, had a slight list to the port side, smokes heavily.  The after mast is tilted aft, therefore a hit in the stern.  An aircraft circles over the destroyer.  I run for a coup de grace.
22.40   Sound gear reports propeller sounds bearing 280°T.  Another destroyer comes in sight, range about 6000 meters.
22.44 AK 0218 Coup de grace from tube III (T III) depth 4 meters, range 1000 meters, fixed shooting angle 0°.  After 1 minute 02 seconds a hit aft 10 meters.  High red fire mushroom, heavy coil of smoke, thereafter nothing more seen of the stern.
In the mean time the second destroyer (Jervis Hunt Class) comes closer, it is quite dark.  Turn away for a stern shot.
22.53 AK 0218 Shot from tube V (T V):  target speed 10 knots, bow left target angle 143°, depth 4 meters, range = 1500 meters.  Tube runner!  Enemy turns towards, I can see the wake at the stern.  I can not go deep, because the torpedo is half ejected.  As the destroyer closes to 500 meters the torpedo goes.  Target angle 70-80°.  Quickly went very deep!  After 57 seconds, torpedo detonation, no depth charges.
23.10   In the sound gear bearing 20°T and 145°T sinking sounds determined.  I decide to move off submerged, because the aircraft is still above reloaded torpedoes.

My fuel inventory (55 cbm) is probably not sufficient for the coming convoy operation and following return transit.  Because the boat due to various failures (Hagenuk, G.H.G. forward diving plane, leakage of about 15 cells of battery II) is not fully ready for combat, I believe a new fuel supply is not appropriate and therefore decide to ask for return transit after detecting the expected convoy.
