Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

At about 35 meters 2 aircraft bombs detonate in the immediate vicinity of the boat.  Immediate failures:  most of the lighting, almost all bulbs, fuses and a number of electrical boxes from the overhead.  Diving planes and rudders failed, the gyrocompass repeater in the control room was smashed; additionally, the flood valves, the main ballast and reserve fuel oil tanks and a number of hull valves were loosened.  A 3-finger thick jet of oil pours out into the control room.  That was the first impression that one could perceive in a short time with the eyes. The boat was caught at 80 meters and diving planes and rudders operated by hand.  After the emergency shut off valves and the hull valves were applied, the clean up work began.  At first it seemed desperate, but once lights came on, the sun shone again.  In addition the fresh water maker and the E-compressor were out of service, as well as the E-compressor.  Also of great concern was that the opening of the drinking water transfer hull valve was not noticed until very late with the result that a significant amount of seawater entered drinking water tank 1.  Part of the drinking water contaminated by seawater was simply drained and after the fresh water maker was again in operation the salt content was gradually reduced by the addition of fresh water.  The coffee tasted a little salty in the first days but that's war.
In the radio room all tubes jumped out.  The long wave transmitter and the direction finding receiver and also the depth sounder were out of service.
The conning tower hatch had also taken a beating, so that on diving about one hundred liters of water rushed into the boat, but you get used to it.  Almost all of the damage could be repaired except for the slow flooding of main ballast tank 3, which had to be accepted.
Furthermore the jet of oil had poured oil over most of the tins in which flour, sugar and vegetables were stored. These provisions had become almost completely inedible. The cause lay in the construction of the tins that were not sealed as before, but were only provided with a cover that oil and moisture could penetrate. No special message concerning the aircraft bombs was sent because only minor damage remained.

14.00   At 14.00 hours provisions transfer took place in Sea State 5.  Everything was executed with the help of 3.7 ammunition canisters and sea bags alongside at approximately 60 meters.  The tanker maneuvered very ponderously and driving alongside was not easy seamanship in the rough sea. For the crew, the transfer was a welcome change. They worked hard for 5 hours harnessed and with swimming trunks. At night contact was maintained on the tanker.
Rubber boats covered with waterproof tarpaulins would be useful as ferries for transfer. Then the transfer of 14 days provisions could be completed in an hour.

The oil transfer was completed in the good weather.
While driving up to the hose one must hold up slightly, otherwise one is easily set on the buoys by the swell and drives them away.  At all cost the towing pennant should be secured by a steel rope, since under strain the pendant slips out of the tow hook and breaks the towing connection. It is better to not let the pennant come loose.
At the very end, when casting off the hose a steel pendant got into the propeller.  It is therefore expedient to stop the diesel facing the hose when casting off the connection. The matter was not tragic.

15.05   Tanker in sight to starboard with bow right, target angle 30-40°.  Maneuvered ahead, allowed myself to fall back.
Under the simplest conditions text book shot from tube 3, depth 3 meters, torpedo speed 30 knots, target speed 12.5 knots, target angle 87°, range 1200 meters.  Passed for undetermined reasons.
        Shot from tube 4.
Depth 3 meters, torpedo speed 30 knots, target speed 14 knots, target angle 103°, range 1200 meters.
        Passed. Speed was over estimated.
        Reloaded submerged, surfaced.
Pursued full of rage in the belly.  Now began an hour-long maneuver ahead.  Very good visibility of about 12 nm, and although I maneuvered ahead in the favorable sun sector, the damned tanker threw a wrench into the works for me, by making a of all things a 40° zig zag away from land.  Everything had to begin all over again.  The tanker zig zagged continuously about every 10 minutes to port or to starboard.  By the time I finally had him at a sharp target angle it had gotten dark. The moon had risen and illuminated me full sized.  I decided not to wait long and to attack submerged from the unfavorable moon sector.  Let myself fall back, the tanker had approximately target angle 30° and the range amounted to1800 meters.  A wonderful attack, the target angle was 50°.  Periscope retracted briefly, shot data set.  Periscope briefly extended, target angle was sharper, about 30°, therefore he had zig zagged towards.  Decision:  shoot at a sharp target angle.  Bearing transmitter out of service, fixed angle ordered. Boat cut under briefly. Periscope extended again.  I estimated the range at 400 meters.  Fixed angle set.  During this time the tanker must have sighted me, zig zagged towards me and rammed.  First he hit the bow, then the periscope and shaved off the bridge with the propeller.  Water intake in the conning tower and in the control room.  In the conning tower the water intake is so heavy that the source can not be determined with the naked eye.  Initialy it was assumed that the pressure hull was cracked.  The conning tower was cleared.
In the control room the leaks at the air search periscope and the radio direction finder were very heavy.  The periscope shaft is full, the head valve leaks heavily.  The whole thing is a fountain.

After eliminating the larger leaks in the control room, determined in the conning tower that only the cable stuffing box and the connecting cables for the ruder angle indicator on the bridge leak very heavily and that the pressure hull was sound.
Surfaced.  The expectation was that the conning tower hatch could not be opened, the damage control party was assembled at the galley hatch.  The conning tower hatch could not be opened, got out through the galley hatch.  The conning tower hatch was cleared immediately. An inspection of the upper deck showed the following:  The bow was bent to port, the watertight bow was torn. The UZO and the radio direction finder were torn. The forward and starboard after net deflectors were torn. The conning tower cladding on the starboard side was destroyed and forced in.
Intend initially to move off and repair.

        A day of repairs.
With the help of the welding torch, 2/3 of the bridge cladding was burned away.   The turning shaft of the radio direction finder was made tight by wooden plugs and grouting compound.  The cable duct and drains in the conning tower were welded shut.
On examining the outer torpedo tube doors it was determined that tubes II and IV could not be opened.
The test dive showed continuous flooding, so that lying on the bottom or long submerged cruise was always associated with continual filling of the bilges and constant pumping. Intend to proceed on the surface by day into the Straits of Florida.  In no case come home without a steamer, 3 tubes were perfectly operable.
I developed a provisional UZO and affixed binoculars to aim with.  Motto was:  Revenge for the ramming.

Steamer in sight, a large freighter of 6000 tons.  Maneuvered ahead for surface attack.  Bright moonshine, must attack out of the unfavorable moon sector due to shallow water.
Depth 3 meters, torpedo speed 30 knots, target speed 9 knots, target angle 70° and 80°, range = 1500 meters.
Double shot.  1 hit tears the stern off, which burns several meters from the steamer.  Crews abandons ship.  Steamer sank over the stern.
11.15 DB 9763 Before reloading, a large tanker by appearance type "W.B. WALKER" in sight on northerly course.
Because of the bright moonshine and the early dawn beginning I must move across to the starboard side.  I am stop in 8 meters water and wait for my victim.  Visibility is very good.
Depth 3 meters, torpedo speed 30 knots, target speed 10 knots, target angle 70° and 80°, range = 1000 meters.
Double shot.  Hit amidships.  Monumental detonation.  For a minute the tanker disappears in the detonation cloud.  Then the tanker lay directly on the bottom.  The superstructure and the over deck visible out of the water.  Tanker burns incredibly, the smoke cloud could still be seen 12 hours

Yet another tanker in sight to port.  Shot from the stern tube.  Shot does not go out, because the withdrawing linkage can not be moved.  After a minute the tube is ready again, however the tanker ran off.  Coup de grace on the burning tanker, to destroy the superstructure.  A bottom runner, because the depth was only 8 meters.  Otherwise the running track was perfectly distinguished.
Shadows in sight ahead and to port far off.  Steamers with northerly course, all were soon out of sight.  Meanwhile sunrise.  Put the boat on the bottom at the St. Lucie Shoal Buoy in 30 meters water.  Reloaded and manned the sound gear.
Sound bearing.  Boat raised from the bottom, to periscope depth.  Steamer on southerly course at 8000 meters.  Ran submerged towards land to attack the next steamer.
Due to sound bearing all around sweep.  Destroyer range = 1000 meters running towards me at target angle 0°.  The destroyer had seen me in the mirror flat sea.  Depth charges from 22.50 hours.  Water depth was about 25-30 meters.  While going deeper from periscope depth the first depth charges detonated at 20 meters.  With these both diving planes failed.  Before the diving planes were shifted to hand drive, and the bilges, which now filled continuously due to the already described problem, were pumped, they forced the stern down.  In a few seconds the boat developed a tendency to break through the water surface, so that broaching could only be prevented by flooding the negative buoyancy tanks.  The boat sank to the bottom like a stone.  Two destroyers located [used Asdic] the boat and overran it very accurately.
One heard the depth charges falling and they all lay damn close.  At long range the locator sent out an impulse every few seconds. On getting closer the boat was held by an irregular strength impulse which sounded as if the main ballast and fuel oil tanks were being fired at by a light machine gun with short bursts of fire.
The better part of the lighting failed immediately from the depth charges, it rained down in the usual manner from the ceiling. All depth gauges - and rudder indicators failed. The diesel air intake mast leaked heavily, so that the drain had to be closed and

        the mast allowed to flood.
Furthermore the magnetic compass, the starboard diesel telegraph and the hull valve reporting system was destroyed.  Intention:  By all means get the boat off the bottom.
On the next circle of the destroyers the negative buoyancy tanks were expressed, the bilges pumped, everything had already been trimmed forward and the E-motors were running at AK, the diving plane set hard down.  It did not help.  The boat shot up with a large stern down angle.  Broaching was only prevented by flooding the negative buoyancy tanks.  Again we lay on the bottom and were attacked anew with depth charges.  Now all E-motors and rectifiers were turned off.  The boat was still exactly overrun.  Intention: run over the bottom.
The negative buoyancy tanks were slowly expressed with air and the regulating tanks were pumped so that the boat barely had negative buoyancy.  Then the motors were run at GF, then at LF, so that the boat slowly but surely slid over the bottom.  After 7 hours the brave boat had slid to about depth 60 meters.
Intention:  at darkness surface by blowing and run at AK and make repairs.  In the meantime as the depth charges disappeared, a third destroyer arrived, destroyers patrolled back and forth behind the boat.

    07.05.42
05.25   Surfaced at darkness.  30 kg of air remaining and battery empty.  A new surprise followed.  Main ballast tank 5 and 3 could not be emptied, so that the boat could not run at AK.  The boat literally floated only on main ballast tank 1.  That did not help.  Ruder hard over.  Negative buoyancy tanks expressed and when the over deck fully emerged initially proceeded at HF.  During the night main ballast and reserve fuel oil tank 4 was pumped out, so that during the day we had at least two ballast tanks.  Main ballast and reserve fuel oil tank 2 was still full.  Intention: initially conduct repairs submerged.

An extremely well executed patrol.  Despite severe damage from aircraft bombs and ramming the Kommandant decided, after no traffic was found in the open sea, to operate directly off the coast with the only limited readiness to dive boat in just 8 meters of water. Here making the fullest use of the boat and crew he gained success, proving the fighting spirit, tenacity and skill of the Kommandant.  The measures taken during the severe depth charge pursuit in shallow water were correct.
