Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

04.09.43 La Pallice Departure with orders to head for BE 5820.
    10.09.43
    18.35   From B.d.U.:

Up to now no detections,  Approached in BF 48.  1 shot down.
    12.09.43
    11.55   From B.d.U. to U-402:
Report concerning approach to BF 48 was too short.  Times and dates missing.  Exact information important for Hagenuk evaluation and to compare with enemy submarine sighting reports. Enemy aircraft reported submarine sighted on 7 September at 12.31 hours BF 4881, 23.05 to 23.35 hours BF 4597 submarine course 280°. On 8 September 06.18 hours BF 4851 submarine course 210°.  By plotting only U-402 was in this area.  Suspect that boat was approached during darkness without location and was detected after searches with searchlight.  If not accurate, report later when transmitting for other reasons.
    15.09.43
    19.47   From B.d.U.:

        "Leuthen" go!
    10.50   From B.d.U.:
On 21 September at 08.00 hours switch "Hubertus" Circuit.
    16.30 AK 3948 From U-402:
23.00 hours stern miss on destroyer target angle 0°, suspect due to high speed.  None of my outdated messages held.  To Radio Message 1155 of 12 September correct except for time of sighting by aircraft 12.31 hours.  95 cbm.
18.13   On the U-338 report that he remains on the surface for anti-aircraft defense, all boats get order to remain on the surface and to pursue the convoy at highest speed.
