Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

This KTB uses the depth notation "depth T = xx meters"  Under this scheme, the actual depth was twice the depth given after T = so for example, if the KTB entry read "depth T = 50 meters, the actual depth was 100 meters.  This was intended to hide the actual depth for security purposes. This notation was used from about January 1940 to December 1941.  In these KTBs, depths written without using "T =", for example "dived to depth 35 meters" were not so disguised.

The tug's seamanship not exactly great, but the ice was pretty thick and plentiful.

    01.03.40
    08.00   Cast off from Brunsbüttel
09.32 On the Elbe Am stuck in the ice.  The tugs have really put us in it.  The tug "SEEADLER" is completely useless, because he only has 2 propeller blades and so the boat can be towed at most at 4 knots.  Because the Kommandant of "U-49" is ill, I lead both boats.  Therefore gave the tug "LOEWE" to "U-49" and went with own engines without a tug close behind the Sperrbrecher through the ice barriers.
    10.30   Passed Cuxhaven.
    12.20   Passed Elbe I.
13.44   Entered Helgoland, made fast alongside "SAAR".

Carried out trim test, afterwards crew and boat exercised.  Navigation personnel are still very weak in their knowledge.
15.28 W 2-3, clear, Vis. good Made fast alongside "SAAR".
The potatoes are already very bad,  so far 2 zentner [100 kg] had to be sorted out and thrown outboard from the 12 sacks.
I do not like lying in large packs of 4-5 boats here . . .

08.00 W 4, Vis. medium Departed for independent training..  The transmitter to the daughter gyro-compasses does not work, therefore ran in and requested new parts from The Naval Shipyard Wilhelmshaven.  Because it is not certain these parts will arrive before departure due to the bad weather conditions, exchanged the transmitter to the daughter gyro-compasses with "U-49".  Outbound Orders for 5 March 1940 to patrol Atlantic 29 were received.  Outfitting and fuel were supplied.
18.00   Outbound orders were canceled by telephone.

09.03.40 Wilhelmshaven U-boat Base Several dived practiced at the pier.  Boat dives just deep enough, so that the bridge is flooded over.
During the training cruise on 8 March it was observed that the boat had a strong steam cloud behind arising at speed settings over HF.  The cause is the new annular duct, which should prevent the sparking of the diesel "perfectly".  After consulting with the shipyard a flap can be installed, which will block the annular duct for driving by day, which can be released at night. For this the boat is to be in the shipyard on 11 March at 08.00 hours.
