Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

08.06.42   Steamer turned away to starboard.  The 3rd 10.5 cm shot lay at the bridge, whereupon the transmitting ended immediately.
A lifeboat is launched in the lee, therefore fire was temporarily stopped.  When the lifeboat had set off, the steamer was sunk by a total of 60 shots of 10.5 cm, of these about 30 hits.  It settled quickly over the stern.  Size at least 3000 GRT, it cannot be the one listed in "Gröner" named "ROSENBORG". Heavy loading equipment and 4 large hatches.
18.35   Due to the Radio Message warning did not close the boats, instead moved off on a deceptive course of 220° at 15 knots.
19.07   A steamer came in sight bearing 225° about 14 nm away. Enemy bow left, again course 130°!  Maneuvered ahead with enemy course 125°.  Target speed = 9 knots.  Own speed 15 knots.
20.00 DL 9980 A flying boat came in sight bearing 330°T and circled over the sinking location of the previous steamer.

    20.02   Crash dive!
The new steamer now had about target angle 20°, enemy speed is plotted at 10 knots, at 5 knots I should reach shooting position easily.
20.19   Came to course 190°, speed 5 knots.
20.23   The flying boat is now at the steamer, circles him several times and then flies in the direction of the sinking location.
20.26   The steamer then sets his identification signal and came about, as a result the shooting opportunity passes, I must let him go at 5000 meters.
The flying boat came back several times, so it was notified by the lifeboat of my departure course, especially since it never flew in a different direction.
20.39   Came to course 130°, to possibly get the steamer after the rescue operation.
The flying boat continues to circle.

16.44 DL 9910 The vessel of about 1000 GRT, suddenly turned to target angle 90°, range 2500 meters.  I hoped that he would turn back again, because the range was too great and I only have Atos at my disposal forward.  The enemy has obviously reduced speed significantly.  Only shifts a bit and always holds at target angle 70 to 90°.  So he makes a quarter circle around us.  With the flat water frequent extension and retraction of the periscope is necessary, which causes particularly loud noise.

Comments of the Befehlshabers der Unterseeboote

on the Kriegstagebuch of "U 504" from 1.4.42 to 7.7.42.

In comparison to the encountered independent traffic, the success could have been greater with a little more luck and fewer misses.  The behavior on 20 May was clumsy.  When a shadow is sighted it is necessary to maintain contact until the course of the enemy can be determined.
