Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

12.35                                                  Sighted the first pier, a medium sized freighter lies there.  Continued on, put this off for the way back because exploration of the back most part of the roadstead should be carried out first.
13.00   A smoke feather, at 14.00 hours two large, deep lying steamers in sight at anchor.
14.16   Initiated attack, in so doing the attack periscope and trim control fails.  Continued on [further into the bay past the ships], made repairs, struck out for the first part of the bay [turned back towards the ships and the exit].  Here and during the second attack water density changes of 3 (= 3 tons) within 30 seconds.  Boat was twice caught at depth 10.5 meters by flooding the negative buoyancy tanks.
16.02   Two single bow shots on the innermost freighter, at anchor, 7000 GRT, range = 400 meters, shooting angle 35°.  No detonation.  Both torpedoes were not heard in the sound gear, also did not broach.  Continued on [past the target] for a stern shot.
16.15   Two single stern shots, shooting angle 180°, range = 600 meters, hit forward 30 meters and aft 20 meters.  Sinking heard after 3 minutes.
16.20   After the shot the boat settled through to depth 16 meters, on coming up again collision with the second freighter at depth 15.5 meters, conning tower was bent over, easily heard.  The boat was brought under by flooding the negative buoyancy tanks and the crashed against the bottom in 44 meters water, contrary to the charts, sand not rock.  Minor water intake through the radio direction finder.
16.23   Raised the boat from the bottom, attack initiated on the collision object.
16.46   Two bow single shots, shooting angle 0°, range = 550 meters.  Hit forward  40 meters, aft 30 meters.  Sinking after 1-1/2 minute.  Large freighter, 9000-10000 GRT.  Length 140 to 150 meters, draft 8.5 to 8.7 meters, 4 masts, 6 cargo hatches.  Both ships loaded.
Moved off to the third freighter at the pier which unfortunately has disappeared in the meantime.  Moved off out of the roadstead and bay until the beginning of darkness.  17 hours submerged.

00.01   Surfaced:  After surfacing again a large operation in the same area as yesterday.  Searchlights and strong illumination.  Aircraft up to 4 at the same time sometimes with set lights.  Takeoff and landing observed.  Two aircraft test their searchlights.  They are double searchlights, inclined downwards about 60°, broad beam.  Aircraft fly under the coast from BB 6355 to 6385.  It confirms the suspicion that the ore steamers are brought out from square 6381either in poor weather by day in bad weather, or by night under aircraft escort.  Since the first appearance of the boat in square 6381 and especially since the sinking on 29 September off the main harbor strong increase in surveillance.  A patrol vessel isalways off the main harbor.  Strong air by day, recently coastal night air.  No air locating [radar] determined.  Patrol vessels mostly old type, however with Asdic.  CHURCHILL destroyer observed three times.  Detected traffic close off square 6381 to main harbor or to the south direct about a steamer every 2 days, without exception large types.  To the north apparently only coastal traffic, small steamers every 4-6 days.  Success possibilities strongly dependent on weather.  During operations 17 fog days.  With NNE to SSW winds ground sea off the coast, steering at periscope depth often not possible.  Strong water density changes, from 30 meters to periscope depth up to 3 tons must be pumped.

Commentary of the Befehlshabers der Unterseeboote

                             on the Kriegstagebuch "U 513" from 30.7. - 22.10.1942.

Well executed, first patrol by an experienced Kommandant with a new boat.
The achieved success, despite strong impairment by fog, is gratifying.
Especially noteworthy was the success achieved during the penetration of the Bay off Bell Island.
