Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

17.27 AK 1334 Smoke trace in sight bearing 130°T.  Turned towards it.  Steamer comes out quickly.  Target angle 0°.  Dived to attack, steamer zigzags heavily around general course 220°, speed about 12 knots.  Freighter 5000 GRT.
The missing attack periscope is now very painful.
18.25   Steamer zigzagged away strongly, no longer zigzaged back.  Perhaps he noticed me (thick air search periscope and perhaps exposed too far).

21.36   Dived to listen.  Very faint sound bearing in 290°T, very uncertain.
21.50   Report that the hull closure valve of tube III is leaking.
    22.00   Surfaced.
[Fu.M.G. = radar] Pursued in the direction of the sound bearing.  Visibility is bad, rain.  Steamer does not come in sight again.  Searched with Fu.M.G., no indications.
23.45   Search hopeless, pursuit broken off.  Continued to the west at transit speed.
The steamer probably ran at a higher speed and used the bad visibility to make a strong evening zigzag.  I should have surfaced earlier after the abortive approach, by the loud and exact sound bearing I thought the range was still too low.

On both sides ashore many lights (driving automobiles).  Searchlights over the island.
05.15   Am far into the bay.  Up to now nothing seen.  Again ran to the north on the east side of the bay close under land.  In so doing passed close by the island.
06.05   South of the island broke through between the small and large islands for reconnaissance.  The NE-passage and a part of the roadstead is protected by searchlights, which search over the water's surface every 10 minutes.  Suddenly a shadow is in sight, close under the island.
    06.12   To Action Stations.
Continued to penetrate, maneuvered between small islands, large rocks and a large extinguished lattice buoy.  The moon comes out (which always comes out whenever you don't want it).
06.19   Searchlights cut across the water's surface.

I believe I am detected and turn away.  During the next searchlight illumination two shadows are seen clearly.  The steamers lie between me and the searchlight beam.
06.36   Turned to close again, close under the coast to avoid the searchlight.  The steamers are difficult to distinguish because of the dark background of the high island directly behind them.  On closing three steamers are in sight, they lie off the the roadstead at anchor.
06.53   Searchlight illuminates again, extremely disagreeable at the moment.  The next seconds will decide, it pans further, then he has me. Right in front of me, it stops, swings back and is then extinguished.
06.56   It must hapen now.  I must take advantage of the next 10 minutes until the next use of the searchlight.
07.02 BB 6381 Shot from tube  I on the steamer lying furthest away (3000 GRT).  Afterwards immediately shot from tubes II and III on a large ore vessel directly before me (6000 GRT).  All three shots target speed 0 knots, shot angle 0°, range 800 meters.  Turned to starboard.  After 48 seconds running time a hit aft on the large ore vessel.  The steamer settles aft, lays over on its port side and is shrouded in a cloud of smoke.
07.04   While turning shot from tube V once more at the 6000 tonner, afterwards immediately turned towards the third steamer and while turning  shot from tube IV on the third steamer (5000 GRT).  Both shots target speed 0, shot angle 0°, range 800 meters.  After 45 seconds running time hit forward on the 6000 tonner.  After 35 seconds running time hit aft on the 5000 tonner.  This one settles aft immediately, forward slowly deeper.  Steamers shoot light rockets.  When I again turn toward the 6000 tonner it was gone, but I see behind it a piece of the forecastle and a piece of the stern from steamer shot at first.  The hit [of the torpedo from tube I] was not observed by me.  They occurred on the first target and the 6000 tonner at the same time, apparently, the steamer was broken in the middle. A small piece of the forecastle and a small piece of the stern stuck out canted towards one another.
07.06   Ran off at AK, close under the island  to the southern corner and then out.  While running off the sinking of the steamer shot last was observed.
08.00 BB 6349 On the island nothing happens.  I get out to deep water and out of the bay unmolested.

04.36   Ran in to complete the task in BB 4141 upper-center edge.  Ebb tide.  Dinghy prepared.
04.40   Main ballast and reserve fuel oil tank 7 flooded, set the boat on the beach with the E-motor.
05.35   Boat fixed on the beach, dinghy launched, to land.  There it is about 00.30 hours.  Distance from the shore 700 meters.  The coast is about 15 meters high.  On top there are houses, a road is directly at the coast.
05.50   On the road an automobile comes with target angle bow left.  Directly ahead of us the road makes a curve, so that the headlights of the automobile briefly play on the water surface.  I'm speechless.  Involuntarily I quickly order:  heads away.  The automobile turns further and then runs past directly before us about 800 meters away with target angle bow left 90°.  In its headlight solitary houses and every detail is easily distinguished ashore.
The houses make a shabby impression.
06.20   Dingy comes back.  The agent and his pack were brought to land well and dry.  Main ballast and reserve fuel oil tank 7 and the regulating tank were expressed.  The boat was withdrawn and moved off to mid bay.
Task was completed completely silently and unnoticed.
    07.00   Came to outbound course.

        Miss.
Hit probability was very low, however it had to be attempted.  Switching to a fan shot brought even more delay.  When I again see the steamer in an allaround sweep it had target angle 170-180° and lets out a thick smoke cloud, furthermore the stern light is seen.  I believe I was noticed and the torpedo was outmaneuvered.
    06.33   Ran off.
Check of the combat picture shows that the tanker course in the bay must have been about 320/330° and that accordingly the target angle at the shot must already have been 140/150°.  Therefore the miss is explained.

Observations made to date in area BB 10 and 40 show that only sporadically occurring independents may be expected, which in turn drive so close to the coast, or looking in coves for protection that the prospects of a successful attack is very low and more or less a matter of luck. The defense, also mild, suggests the same. These observations are consistent with those of Schwantke in BA 30 and Rasch. in BB 50.  Intend to move off, find a sheltered spot to for downloading [upper deck torpedoes], after the corresponding report leave the area and go to BB 70.

03.30   Short Signal not acknowledged, apparently not heard.
03.55   Outgoing Short Signal:  Enemy located naval square BB 9516, course 300°, speed 8 knots.
04.00 BB 9516 Short Signal was understood.
NW 2-3, Sea 1-2, overcast, Vis. medium, bright night
    04.05   To Action Stations.
04.06   Ran in to attack on the foremost group.  All tubes are ready.  Intend single shots as much as possible.
04.09   Steamer has bow left, target angle 50-60°, range 2000 meters.
Escorts are not seen in the immediate vicinity.
04.11   The convoy zigzagged to port, so towards me, so that one line abreast virtually lies with a sharp target angle towards me.  Range decreased very quickly.  Must turn away.  Unfortunately only the stern tubes are in shooting position.
04.15   Shot from tube V and VI on large 8000 ton tanker in ballast and overlapping smaller steamer, possibly an escort vessel.  Target angle 90°, target speed 8 knots, range 1000 meters.  Ran off ahead of the convoy.
After 2 minutes 30 seconds running time a hit on the tanker, forward between the mast and the bridge.  Tanker immediately settled forward.  Very high dark explosion column,  Steamer sets a red light and stays back.
04.21   Nothing happens with the escort.  Turned for a bow shot.  Opportunity is unique, 4 targeted single shots from ahead in the line abreast.  Nothing but fat morsels.
04.22 [cover refers to the gyro angle of the torpedoes matching the input from the torpedo data computer] Boat lies in shooting position, no cover, no cover, always no cover.  It seems an eternity.  We later determine it is working properly but it takes its time for the motor in the torpedo data computer to match the angle. The situation is unpleasant. Lying as broad as I am before the line abreast, that approaches me at target angle 0°, range only 1200 meters, quickly growing smaller.  In the mean time a light rocket goes up, thank God for misses.  A steamer has apparently seen me and immediately starts to shoot.  Red tracer, caliber and firing rate about like our 3.7 cm.
04.23   Finally cover.  First Watch Officer calmly takes aim on the fattest steamer, an apparently new 10000 GRT special ship, (Meier bow, 2 pairs of

Double shot from tube I and II, Target angle 60°, target speed 8 knots, range 1000 meters.
04.24   In the mean time the projectile impacts are coming closer, now lie very accurately, only a bit too short.
Crash dive, went to depth A -40 meters.
During the dive about 1 minute 5 seconds running time clearly 2 shortly after one another torpedo detonations heard by various crew members.  About 1 munute later sinking sounds observed (bursting of bulkheads, smashing together of metal pieces, all exactly on the bearing where the steamer must have sunk.).
04.27   2 depth charges.  Went to depth A +20 meters.
        Convoy passes over me.
04.32   Boat settles through to depth A +40 meters.
04.37   6 depth charges, better placed.  Boat goes to depth A +60 meters.
04.40   Boat can only be held at speed.  Outer tube door of tube III does not hold tight.  Flooding and draining cock of tube III also leaks.  Tube drains into torpedo compensating tank 3 by itself.  That made the boat 3 tons too heavy.  Torpedo compensating tank 3 was pumped out.  Boat was held.  Heating connector and fitting for continuous ventilation of tube III also leaks.
04.54   Dull bang in the boat.  Afterwards water intake in the bow room.  The boat falls slowly.
Main ballast tank 5 blown.  Boat holds at A +80 meters with 0° bow down.
In tube III the stuffing at the heater connection fitting is blown out.  A stream of water 3-4 cm in diameter comes into the boat.  The bow room fills slowly.  All attempts to tighten are unsuccessful.  The main ballast pump pumps out the bow room however does not keep up.  The water rises, is now up to the circular hatch, continues rising.  Bow room is abandoned, the bulkhead closed.
04.57   Boat was heavily down by the bow (over 20°) and falls.
        All men astern.
At depth A +90 meters both E-motors ahead AK and main ballast tanks 8 and 5 blown, boat holds, boat rises, boat rises quickly.
05.09   Because the bow room is apparently totally flooded, the boat can no longer be held submerged.
05.18   Boat broached.  Once more blew strongly and then out.  It has to succeed.
05.20   When I open the conning tower hatch the convoy lies

Escort vessels on both sides, however far enough away from me.
        Someone was watching over us.
05.24   Ran off to the north.  While running off abeam to starboard, therefore behind the convoy, a streamer and a destroyer in sight.  It is the torpedoed tanker. Apparently it lies stopped.  The escort is close to him.  Escort gives Morse signals in the direction of the convoy by searchlight, moves off from the wounded tanker and briefly sets two red lights one over the other.  From the tanker only a thick black clouds can be seen.  When the cloud goes away there is nothing more to be seen.  These observations were from several sailors from the lookout and partly from myself, made independently of one another.
I believe the sinking of the tanker is very likely.
05.40   Moved off, because the boat is not ready for combat with a fully flooded bow room.  Convoy passes out of sight.
Too bad, there were such nice big steamers and apparently a tired and weary screen.
Bow room pumped and leaks carefully examined.  New packing was installed in the heater fitting in tube III.
        Forward diving plane motor flooded.
    05.50   Incoming Radio Message 0456/21/204:

WSW 2, Sea 1-2, Vis. medium, bright night
08.30   Boat again clear for diving with the limitation that on diving a torpedoman must drain tube III so that there is no pressure in the tube and the outboard pressure forces the outer tube door firmly on its seat.
How the outer tube door and the tube fittings would fare in case of a depth charge pursuit is uncertain.
09.00   Therefore I decide to report that the boat is only conditionally ready for the intended convoy operation and to request return transit.

Comments of the Befehlshabers der Unterseeboote

                         on the Kriegstagebuch of "U 518" from 26.9. - 15.12.1942

The first patrol of the Kommandanten with a new boat was successfully carried out with special courage and skill.  The heavy water intake due to material failure (heating fitting with leaking outer tube door) nearly caused the loss of the boat.  The boat was preserved due to the prudence and determination of the Kommandanten and the crew, the deliberate and quick work of the men, as well as the luck which joined the brave. The Kommandant sought the available opportunities with gratifying attack zeal and properly exploited them!
A remarkable and exemplary first patrol.
Necessary measures concerning the heating plug fitting have been introduced.

            For correctness:

    Oberleutnant (MA) and Adjutant.
