Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

6 bombs hit ahead to port between 10 and 150 meters.  6 detonations about 2-3 seconds later, very strong concussion in the boat.  "Landcaster" burned on both starboard engines and crashed.  The aircraft exploded on impact.  Because it was accepted that the aircraft crew would not get out and because initially there were no identifiable failures, dived to depth A -40 meters.  One lightly wounded.
After diving determined failures:  14 cells of Battery II, suction piping for Battery II torn, 1 Eto, tube II cannot be completely opened, transmitter.

              on the K.T.B. of "U-539" (Lauterbach-Emden) from 24.2. - 23.10.43.

First patrol of the boat and the Kommandanten.  The boat operated in Group Rossbach.  Several aircraft attacks were coolly and skillfully fended off, the favorability of the situation was quickly recognized and exploited.  On 8 October the dive was too late, the boat remained undamaged by luck.
Accredited success:  1 Lancaster shot down.
