Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

After second expressing of the port negative buoyancy tank at depth A -40 meters 2 detonations, similar to aircraft bombs.  After surfacing found an oil trace.  Result of preliminary investigation and assumed cause see Radio Message page 4.  Later exact findings in calm weather conditions showed bulging of main ballast and reserve fuel oil tank 4 port and tearing off the wall from tension due to excess pressure from the cracked negative buoyancy tank.  For this reason, explosive devices are assumed. (See Radio Message page 12).

        To Group "Löwenherz".
Absolutely try to attack tonight at the beginning of darkness.  Evaluation of the last large convoy battles has shown that, due to surprise and inattentiveness, the first night is always the most favorable.
19.25 AK 4327 Destroyer bearing 30°T, small target angle, course south.  Suspect aft escort.
Destroyer zigzagged 30-40° around target angle 0° and despite AK slowly grew larger.  I am obviously detected.  Locating was not determined.  Favorable visibility conditions.

21.25   Destroyer increases speed and was quickly very loud.
21.28   Boat was overrun, loud explosive sounding, immediately afterwards about 8 to 10 well-placed depth charges over the boat (depth A +90 meters).  Boat was caught at depth A +110 meters by blowing main ballast tank 3.  The usual electronic failures.  Hull valve in the control room leaks heavily, however in-rushing water can be controlled.
Further listening pursuit.  No depth charges.

00.12 AK 2823 Boat is in the center of the convoy, without shadows being distinguished before.  About 6-8 steamer and 1 destroyer in tight formation, the nearest 200 meters away, probably a forward partial convoy.  Unfavorable a shooting position due to too low distance and ramming danger, to use multiple tubes.  Therefore ran ahead on parallel course to get clear on one side and fire all tubes on the tight steamer group.
    00.37   3 detonations.
01.03   In the mean time, visibility improved to about 1000 meters.  While turning to run in 3 star shells astern to starboard, however far off, shot from the direction of the convoy.  They don't seem to concern me.

Correct measure by the Watch Officer: hard to starboard.  Boat had turned 20-30° up to bomb throw.
4 medium aircraft bombs to port, 20 to 40 meters away, no impact ignition.  Severe concussion.
        After the approach crash dive.
Boat slowly reached depth after resetting the automatic battery switch, no further attack followed.  A developing stern down angle due to water intake in torpedo compensating tank 1 and from water overflow from fuel oil tank 1i can be corrected by speed increase and pumping at depths up to A meters.  Malfunctions in the electrical system were corrected one after another.  Further damage see Radio Message page 12.

During listening and depth charge pursuit on 4 April repeated explosive locating by one destroyer observed.
To 1.)  Occurred initially during the searching of the destroyer at irregular intervals, perceptible with the naked ear, there was also a noise in the listening gear in connection with the hard metallic blow, additionally a sound.  Directly before a very well-placed depth charge series an especially loud bang was heard at all places in the boat.
To 2.)  Time difference between sounding and depth charge detonation 1-2 seconds.
To 3.)  The destroyer overran the boat.
To 4.)  Other locating sounds were not determined.
