Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

Hit forward 30 and aft 40 meters.
Enemy speed 10 knots, target angle left 80°, torpedo speed 40 knots, range 1800 meters.  Running time 87 and 93 seconds.
Slight sheet of flame and explosion column.  Steamer remained lying stopped.  Lights on deck.  Crew went to the boats.  Torpedo was strongly phosphorescent observed nearly to the target.
01.11   Coup de grâce from tube V (T III with Pi II)
Unexplained miss, torpedo depth 5 meters.  Enemy speed 0, target angle left 90°, range 2000 meters.

03.07.43 Steamer lies perfectly stopped.  Tube V was shot with a fixed angle 180°.  Again end of run detonator.   Steamer now take a slight list to starboard, no indication of sinking.  Lively searchlight traffic between the lifeboats.
02.26   Coup de grâce from tube II (Ato)
Enemy speed 0, target angle left 90°, range 1500 meters, torpedo depth 3 meters.  Fixed shooting angle 0°.  Hit center.  Running time 105 seconds.
After the hit the smokestack is no longer seen.  A little bit later the steamer breaks apart in the center.  Bow and stern come high out of the water.  Light track of the torpedo observed up to the target.
    02.45   Steamer sunk.
About 6 to 8 lifeboats were launched.  Captain searched for but not found.  A boat was taken alongside, occupied with 18 Negroes.  Steamer was called "EMPIRE PYANORD"? and came with cotton from Alexandria.  Cruised around the south tip of Africa for Freetown.  The cotton explains the slow sinking.

Comments of the Befehlshabers der Unterseeboote

                             on the K.T.B. of "U-618" (Baberg) from 8.6. - 5.9.1943.

Unfortunately the over 12-week long patrol brought only one sinking success.

To 3 July:  The attack was made from too great range, also the coup de grâce.
To 26 June:  The shadow should have been identified in greater detail.  A shift of 100° with a starting range of 4-5 nm within 12 minutes allows no understandable conclusions concerning the behavior of the boat.
To 1 September:  A shoot down of the aircraft seems likely.
The long patrol placed exceptional demands on the boat and crew.

Accredited success:  Steamer "EMPIRE PYANORD" (?) 7000 GRT sunk
1 aircraft - shoot down possible.
