Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

U-68 was a member of Group Group Eisbär.  The Group was ordered to conduct a surprise attack in the roadstead and then operate in the Cape Town area.  The Eisbär Operations Order is found in the last pages of the BdU KTB for 1-15 August 1942 (pages 96-104).  There is also a note from the Naval Staff on the first page of the KTB (page 64).  Click the BdU icon to see the BdU KTB.

Observed all along the Cape Peninsula a large searchlight exercise about 16 strong searchlights in the air and to sea, later anti-aircraft firing in False Bay.
23.45   Course 0°, LF continued transit to the roadstead.  Robben Island is darkened, from time to searchlight at Greenpoint and fixed lights are very bright and clear.  Believe that with this intense illumination an unseen break through of the determined sector at a pre-set time is not possible, additionally the heavy traffic, which is passing in and out is monitored by lighting.  An attack on roadstead only appears promising in fog, or at a time point defined by the boats themselves at the time, i.e. not by two boats simultaneously because fixed submerging sectors are necessary.
After all, intend for now to penetrate the outer roadstead to make day observations.  Traffic here between Cape Town and mine area so heavy that even here it is difficult to avoid being seen in the good visibility at night.

        2)  Attack date in accordance with operations area is the night of 11 October.
3.)  If the harbor is still empty then, free to attack for Emmermann and Merten.  Report immediately.

Because by the Emmermann Radio Message the harbor is empty, which at this time of year and the prevailing bad weather seems very reasonable, after a further examination of all observations, waiting promises no better chance of success.  The danger of the boats being discovered in the next four days is large.  Immediate operation waiving the attempted breakthrough into the roadstead promises far greater and totally certain success through immediate heavy passing traffic. 7 ships were previously observed within 24 hours at point A and here.  Without question defense readiness has been heavily promoted by recent Japanese air attack.

    02.00   Course 180°, HF.
Observation of the outer roadstead postponed to one day before the new zero time.  Set off to the south to observe traffic.   Then however decide to report my own observations by Radio Message because to me success is questionable, and a 4-day wait  is not worthwhile.

    10.57   Dived for submerged attack.
Steamer is about 5000 GRT, quite modern, L.K.W.'s [trucks] with Red Cross markings as deck cargo.  Through an enemy zig zag comes very near, about 400 meters.  At the shot in the heavy Swell and flat surface the boat was noticed by the steamer.

Depth 4 meters, torpedo speed 40 knots, target speed 8 knots, target angle bow left 100°, range 1000 meters, estimated 400 meters, lead angle red 11°, firing angle 356.4°, gyro angle green 0.5°, target bearing 7.1°, own course 150°, torpedo course 146.4°, spread angle 5.2°.  Enemy length 100 meters.
Miss.  One torpedo was a surface runner and passed directly behind the stern, Second torpedo not observed.  Completely unexplained.  Steamer turns away hard and opens fire on the periscope from 2 cannons.  Impacts lie badly at the target.

15.08   Steamer in sight bearing 330°T, course 140°.

According to the current Route Anton, the steamer will only come into the operations area after 1100 nm therefore following is impossible.  If a 200 nm circle from Ascension remained in effect, because own traffic does not come in question because of the air danger, at 11 knots enemy speed the attack could still be performed tonight.  First matched speed and then maneuvered ahead.

Steamer is a passenger freighter of about 7-8000 GRT, course 140°, 11 knots, coal fired.
As an example of parallel events, Schendel asks B.d.U. at the same time for attack permission for a steamer on Route Anton.  Because there is no Radio Message connectivity and clear orders, steamer even more suspicious for two reasons (unshortened masts, no zig zag) refrain from questioning by Radio Message and let the missing 8000 GRT sweep along, with a very heavy heart.

Remarks on Operation "Eisbär" and the Cape Town Operations Area.

The fundamental condition for operations in the Cape Town area is favorable weather.  With heavy traffic 3 ships could not be pursued due to weather, 2 failed attacks were brought about by bad weather.  There was no possibility of attack for 70% of the total time in the operations area due to weather conditions based on submerged attack.  The most favorable conditions can be encountered in January-March, because then there are operational possibilities beyond night attack on the surface.   The area will remain rewarding for a long time, especially when tempers have calmed down there again by short break .
I think that for a single boat, at a time freely chosen, an advance in the roadstead, the execution of which can expected from December to May is quite possible and promising.  Good opportunities arise for mine missions.  The defense was realized amazing quickly.  Surely preparedness was strongly influenced by the Japanese air raid.   Proficiency and experience of the defense was low.
A repetition in a more favorable season promises good success and will be worth the long journey and operation.

Comment of the Befehlshabers der Unterseeboote

on the Kriegstagebuch of "U-68" from 11.7 to 6.12.1942.

The surprise appearance off Cape Town offered a plethora of opportunities for success which were temporarily restricted by weather conditions, defense conditions have to be regarded as easy, the Kommandant was well considered, operated with skill and achieved a great success.
