Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

    16.00 CE 3763
17.20 CE 3755 Smoke feather bearing 270°T.  Maneuvered ahead.  2 masts come out quickly.  General course 85°, 13 knots plotted.
    18.02   Crash dive to attack.
It is a freighter with 2 masts, forward 1 crows nest, between the very high and broad smokestack and the after mast a stump mast.  Positioned against the sun so size difficult to estimate.  Sometimes seems like a corvette.  Markings not recognized, only a black silhouette.  Armament not distinguished.  In this area an independent with a straight course can only be neutral, and better not knock off a Portuguese is my thought.  At target angle 75°, range = 800 meters I recognize, that it is painted gray, without markings or flag, a large and a small cannon on the forecastle, estimated size 6000 GRT.  I still did not shoot, still was thinking that no Englishmen would proceed on a straight course here and was concerned about catching a neutral.
        Additional considerations:
        1)  Boat is outside Route A and outside the blockade area.
        2)  Steamer is armed and has no markings, therefore enemy.
        3)  Had to be put down.
        Reason for the failure:
No clear thoughts and observation, only instinctive observations.

Intentions:  After passing the Azores on course 250° to cross Route A, then head for EE.
Reasons:  a)  On the Great Circle 1200 nm in Route A, so attack is forbidden on independents.  1010 nm to the objective.  Total 2210 nm
                       b)  On course 250° only 720 nm on Route A where attack is forbidden, 1560 nm to the objective.  Total 2280 nm, detour 70 nm.
                       c)  Arrival in remote part of the operations area at the full moon.  With decreasing moon then nearer to the coast.

        Concerning Müller situation report.
Maneuvered ahead.  We have to run against the long N-Swell.  Port diesel can only run at 380 RPM due to high temperature, a speed of 10-11 knots.  Enemy bearing shifts ahead 8-10° in an hour.  Enemy course 300-320°, 14-16 knots.  If only we could run courses around 300-320°, we could manage, however I always have to evade to the north because he comes out too high.  Main ballast tanks were continually re-blown, watertight forecastle closed.

17.12   Enemy bearing 206°T, has come forward 33°, however we must get him.  Port diesel is better, own speed 13-14 knots.  Slowly the bearing steadies.  Enemy seemed to steer a straight course.   And if he also comes out beyond the spreader, we run on parallel course 310°, turned off at most 10°.
18.13   The bearing shifted slowly aft.
We have made 5° in an hour.

05.46   Artillery fire from the steamer.  Already at the 4th shot lay quite close.  Crash dived.  Closed submerged.  Steamer lay athwart the seas.  I want to shoot a stern shot so there will be room in the stern room.  While turning to shoot, the steamer turned away slowly.
06.41 EE 5629 At target angle 130°, speed 1 knots, coup de grâce.  Range - 600 meters.  Passed.  He continued to turn and now runs off.  I suspect he has listening gear.

He zigzags around course 280°, approximately the same scheme as REUBEN TIPTON.  We are positioned on the general course line.  Speed plotted as 10 knots.  If you only had a certain range measurement in dim haze, the speed plotting would be easy
13.36   Dived to attack, he is just starting the south arc.  Closed at HF perpendicular to his course.  He is still very far away. Target angle is already 60°.  However he must come.
14.36 EE 5654 Single shots from tubes 2 and 3, depth 3 meters.  Range 2500 meters.  Target angle 92° and 95°.  Steamer proceeds in ballast, had 5 cargo hatches, cruiser stern with cannon, estimated at 5000 GRT.  Missed.  It was too far, speed plotting too inexact.
14.45   Steamer changed course to 180°.  Therefore also general course for Trinidad.

23.10.42   Subsequent accurate recording of the zigzag scheme, see Enclosure, showed the following reason for the misses on the two submerged attacks:  I had thought the course from 50 - 00 minutes and 55 - 05 minutes as already the beginning of the south arc and did not observe the offsetting course from 00 - 10 min and 05 - 15 minutes.  As a result, the south arc became larger and the boat was in the middle of it.
Lesson:  Do not have the zigzag scheme in your head, only an accurate drawing gives a clear overview.

06.30   Convoy in sight bearing 220°T.  15 large and several small ships distinguished.  Course 310°.  Escort starboard ahead and astern each one vessel.  We are positioned abeam to starboard and thrust behind the starboard flank escort vessel which is set out about 3000 meters.
Intention:  Proceed within the screen, if we are seen by a steamer they will think we are an escort.  Convoy zigzags, now on course 280°.
08.00 EC 9296 Convoy zigzags towards us, course 340°.    Ran in towards overlapping big steamers in the middle line abreast.  Enemy speed 8 knots.

Turned away for a stern shot.  In the meantime:  hit on normal freighter 4000 GRT over at the other end of the line, sank quickly over the bow.  Hit center on a tanker 9000 GRT, exploded with a high sheet of flame.  Ordered everyone below, flames extinguished, because the tanker broke apart in the middle, sank immediately.  Did not dive.  The first torpedo missed because it was fired 3° before [the fire control system] covered [was locked in].  The report "No cover" was missing.  Hit on freighter, estimated 5000 GRT.  Effect not observed, because
08.11   Single shots from tubes V and VI on 2 tankers, whose bows we passed ahead of.  They overlapped.  Depth 5 meters.  Range = 1200 meters.
2 hits, 1 tanker exploded and sank immediately, estimated 7000 GRT, one burns over its entire length, estimated 6000 GRT.  Boat and surrounding area are brightly illuminated. Ran off at AK, starboard escort relative bearing 240°, stern escort relative bearing 120°, in the fire glow recognized as a corvette with camouflage paint, lies with target angle 30° towards us.  Destroyer to port turns hard to target angle 0°.
08.13   Crash dive to depth A +40 meters.  One time detection sounds like a lump of pebbles thrown against the boat, otherwise nothing.  Sound bearing of the convoy

Size estimate of the tankers 9000 GRT:  Shot range - 1335 meters, with target angle 90° the steamers did not fit in the binoculars.  With a field of view of 6.4° ship length is given by the formula = range times tangent α (α =  ship length in degrees).  The length of the tankers = 152 meters, that corresponds to a size of at least 9000 GRT.
    11.09 Sunrise
11.30   At periscope depth.  The burning tanker is no longer seen, only a high smoke feather and flames on the water.  An aircraft type Douglas B-18 searches in legs close over the water.  We remained below until darkness.

16.30   Convoy on westerly course on the horizon bearing 90°T.  Target angle 0°.  Closed for a stern shot on the starboard column. 10 tankers in 2 columns, distance 2000 meters.  Set off to starboard 1 escort, close air escort.
17.18 EC 9561 Single shots from tubes 5 and 6 on the 1st and 2nd ships of the column, range = 800 meters, speed 7.5 knots, depth 3 meters.
Forward tanker had yellow red flag seat and a cone with vertex upward. I had to go deep immediately after the shot because I had shot directly before the escort positioned to starboard, target angle 0°. Miss.  Error in speed can be at most 1 knot, still should have hit.  Because the conveyor loaded drew only 4 meters, now in an empty condition probably undershot.
Considerations:  1)  Since the attack on the convoy no traffic determined.
                                 2)  There remained only conveyor traffic as attack targets, which only proceed by day.
                                 3)  I have only Atos now.  Depth setting 2 meters and by day and air escort promises little success, due to depth variations of the Atos and sighting of the bubble track.
                                4)  Battery temperature 44°C, continues rising steadily.
Decision:  Set off to naval square EE for the moon period.

02.40   Detection on 149 cm. Crash dived.  Order error, detection was not a steady tone, on top of that was from a vessel, diving was still not necessary.  Sound bearing in 50°T already at maximum heard over the entire horizon.  Nothing seen in the periscope, too dark.  Sound gear gives no clear picture, there is something everywhere.  If we come up we would probably be sitting right before the bow.  Therefore waited, and then went behind it.

08.40   Night flier from 280°T, altitude 100-200 meters exactly over the boat, banks hard in a turn, therefore we were seen.  Crash dive.  No attack.  The detection sounds remained at Volume 1 for during the entire period.  Probably the aircraft was directed by the escort, to disguise the search.  So even though he had us, he went on for the purpose of deception.  Dawn will begin in an hour, then cannot get closer with this escort.  Proceeded submerged.
Final verdict:  The defenses of the enemy with detection and air had been entirely successful.
Considerations:  1)  From previously observed convoys weekly Thursday or Friday.  For the Atos only these come in question as an attack target.  The next would come three days before the full moon.  Night attack due to night air then has little prospect of success.  Maneuvering ahead for a day attack depends on the air situation.
        2)  Convoy route is unknown, possibly by the Windward Passage, Yucatan Strait or Panama Canal.
        3)  Remaining in the coastal area during the moon period if not prudent.
That means:  During the moon period set off from

        1)  Just now ER 9798 sank "BESHOLT" Lobito for Trinidad with tin, copper ore, palm oil.  6 American soldiers from sunken Liberty ship "GEORGE THATCHER" on board.
        2)  From statements of the navigator headed for FC 3296 on course 314°, from there 299°.
                                                               Thilo
Considerations:  1.  From the course of the steamer "HOPEPEAK" and Thilo situation report Capetown - Trinidad runs via ER 90 and 70, from there 290-300°.  After each sinking and U-boat sighting report apparently two routes:  Route A via EE 50 then 245° to Tobago, Route B about at 50°W turning to EO 52 then along the 200-meter line.
        2.  Independent steamers scattered along these routes.
        3.  Therefore, the experience of the last 2 weeks show, steamers can be found, purely randomly, with individual boats in a wide sea area, for example EP, EF.  Speed available to search in such large areas is too low, fuel consumption too high.  Only with reconnaissance by aircraft is operation promising.
        4.  Detection of traffic with enough probability of success is only in the vicinity of focal points (square EO 52 and along the 200-meter line to Tobago, square EE 70).  Prospects in EE 50 are already questionable, usable for the moon period..

        U-boat Men.
The New Year sees, like all three years before, uninterrupted combat. Wherever we stand, be it at the enemy, from the North Cape to the Cape of Good Hope, from the American coast to the Mediterranean, be it the preparation or training of new U-boats and crew, we have only one goal: To strike the enemy. This goal fills us completely. So in the new year, relentless, tough and absolutely fearless, we will achieve it. Everything for our German homeland. Long live the Führer.

Comments of the Befehlshabers der Unterseeboote

on the Kriegstagebuch of "U-129"  from 22.8.42 - 6.1.43.

All success possibilities were perfectly considered and exploited with very good skill.  In particular, the attack on the convoy on 5 November was an excellent performance.
The Kommandant himself recognized the situation on 6 October.
Accredited success:  Sank 7 ships of 44032 GRT,
Torpedoed 1 ship of 5000 GRT.
