Subject: Capture of U-505.
   
Enclosure: (A) Track Chart of U.S.S. GUADALCANAL and FLAHERTY with respect to U-505.
 
     
          1.         On Sunday morning June 4, 1944, Task Group 22.3, consisting of GUADALCANAL, PILLSBURY, JENKS, POPE, CHATELAIN, FLAHERTY, were steaming in the area NE of Cape Verde Islands on base course 000° (T), speed 13. Escorts were screening GUADALCANAL in accordance with screening plan #35 (Appendix to General Signal Book); in position G-0, POPE; in G-1, CHATELAIN; in G-2, PILLSBURY; in G-3, JENKS; in G-4, FLAHERTY.  
     
          2.         At 1109 Z CHATELAIN in position G-1 reported she had a possible sound contact, and about a minute later reported that she was making an attack. The CHATELAIN's depth charge attack brought the submarine to the surface. CHATELAIN opened fire immediately, followed by PILLSBURY and JENKS.  
     
          3.         At about 1115 Z submarine was reported to appear to be surrendering. C.T.G. 22.3 stated he "would like to capture the bastard". ComCortDiv 4 in PILLSBURY ordered "cease fireing until further orders", directed CHATELAIN and JENKS to get a boat over and stated that "we have a boat in the water and we are going aboard"; he then ordered the POPE to circle the area. U-505 was captured at 1126 Z in latitude 210° 30' N.; 19° 20' W.  
     
          4.         When contact was reported, GUADALCANAL with FLAHERTY as screen, turned to westward, then maneuvered around the area, steaming on various courses at high speeds. At about 1300 Z GUADALCANAL closed U-505 and sent prize crew aboard.
