Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

This KTB uses the depth notation "depth T = xx meters"  Under this scheme, the actual depth was twice the depth given after T = so for example, if the KTB entry read "depth T = 50 meters, the actual depth was 100 meters.  This was intended to hide the actual depth for security purposes. This notation was used from about January 1940 to December 1941.  In these KTBs, depths written without using "T =", for example "dived to depth 35 meters" were not so disguised.

Remarks on Hessler convoy

Starboard diesel is again in service.  Angled in at 16 knots.  because it is already twilight.  Dashed into the convoy from starboard astern.  Convoy consists of 8 steamers.  2 columns each of 4 steamers.  Medium size 7000 ton disproportionately large ships, among them 3 tankers each 8-10000 tons.  Largest ship (ship 3 in sketch) large freighter with double cargo cranes, 2 forward, 2 astern, Vessel of the BEAVER Class or FORDSDALE about 9-1100 tons.  Screen 5 destroyers of which Destroyer 1 and Destroyer 2 are certainly distinguished as one smokestack destroyers H or K Class.  Destroyer 3 and Destroyer 4 two smokestack old type.  Z 5 only observed by Morse traffic.  All further - spacing, course, formation - see Sketch I.
20.57   Radio Message to B.d.U.:  At Hessler convoy, attacking.
21.20   Shortly before reaching targeted position the starboard astern destroyer comes so close to the boat at target angle 0° that I have to believe I have been sighted and in any case must shoot.   Take two bow double shots from long range and unfavorable target angle (see Sketch I).
        4 Etos tubes I - IV, range = 2200 meters, target angle 90 - 120°.
Immediately after the shots were taken the starboard astern destroyer suddenly turns away at 400-500 meters.  He had not seen the boat.

Both double shots were misses, no detonation heard or observed.
Moved outside and moved along next to the convoy, reloaded tubes I - IV.
21.50   Crossed the bubble track of an Ato that passed directly ahead of the boat.
22.07   Crossed a new bubble track.  Apparently arising from a miss by U-107.

00.05   Tubes I - III are reloaded, again angled in.
02.22   At shooting position (see Sketch II).  It is not possible to get closer because of the bright visibility.
1st  Double shot from 1800 meters, 9-10000 ton freighter, with heavy cargo derricks, 3 forward and 3 astern, type BEAVER Class.
Hit before and after the vertical smokestack.  Just after the second detonation a third amidships, probably a boiler explosion.  Ship begins to sink immediately, fires a torpedo flare, set out boats and life rafts, goes under.
2nd Single shot on overlapping steamers 5 and 6.
Hit on steamer 6 amidships.  Amidships everywhere a powerful sheet of flame.  Fires a torpedo flare, stops, settles, set out boats and rafts.  Not observed to sink, however from the appearance of the detonation it is probable.  Steamer 5-6000 tons.
3rd  Double shot (stern tubes) while turning on ship 7.  Firing failure on tube V, the torpedo remained in the tube, therefore only a single shot.
Hit steamer 8 instead of 7.  Hit and sheering out observed.  Tanker 8-10000 tons.

02.25   Ran off to reload.  The escorts are gradually awakened by the torpedo detonations, star shell fire, signal rockets, Morse lamps.
02.38 - 03.06   Switched over to E-motors, because a destroyer nearby stopped to listen.  Course 180°.  Intend to reload in peace and head for the shooting location in the morning twilight to determine the names of the steamers.

05.05   Course 0°, LF to head for the shooting location.
06.15   Destroyer shadow bearing 40°T, 1500 meters away, at shooting location.
06.20   2 destroyers circle around a heavily listing steamer, size and type not distinguished.  Because it is getting light very quickly, no further shooting opportunity.  Believe that the steamer will be taken in tow, waiting appears favorable.
06.32 - 07.38   Ran off to the west, until only the mast heads are in sight.  Seems like the tanker of 8-1000 GRT.

And after that Radio Message 0630/28/280 from U-67 concerning incidents that occurred.
U-68 and U-111 were spotted immediately on arrival in Tarrafal Bay by local residents and also by Coast Guard military observers.  A boat came near to determine the nationality of the submarines as far as was possible.  The Coast Guard expects American attack, therefore we were considered as such.  A letter, probably with an ultimatum to depart, was not accepted.  Then or even earlier the Portuguese standby Guard, one destroyer and one submarine (very similar to English CLYDE) were alerted and came straight from the north of San Antonio just as the transfer was completed and the boats put to sea again.
Because the Portuguese U-boat did not allow itself to go in completely into the bay, neither U-111 nor U-68 were observed against the dark background of the island.  He shot two torpedoes into the bay which actually detonated against the rocks.  After a long wait the Portuguese U-boat decided to check his success and went to the bay, while destroyer took over protection further outside.  After determining his failure the Portuguese U-boat returned to sea and encountered U-67 which was approaching from the NW.  After their ramming all further warlike inclinations seems to have passed.
As I see from Müller's Radio Message that he expects to abort his patrol due to the damage, I intend to ask B.d.U. for supply from U-67 because I can use every cbm of fuel and torpedoes for my future journey. After the experience of last night, a transfer at the coast appears to be unfavorable. But suppose that in the Monsoon area the sea is so calm that coming alongside is possible.  Therefore proposed [the transfer] at the coast in the Monsoon area.

I intend to visit the meeting place before daybreak to explore the possibilities for transfer and if appropriate, to propose another [meeting point] by Radio Message.  Because the wind is always from the north, the more the boat approaches the coast and the sea and Swell direction, now directly from the N, I am very skeptical about the conditions.

06.18   Stopped.  Turned into the wind and Sea, course 340°.  Have reached the meeting point.  Despite the NW wind and Sea direction transfer may be possible because the sand of the Bank of Arguin provides good protection.  20 nm to the north it seems even more favorable so that transfer will be possible there if necessary.  At the beginning of morning twilight the "El Mehara" cliffs and the"Piton de Chadallah" are easily seen at 18 nm.
06.35 - 07.18   Fishing vessel bearing 130°T.  Because I want to remain unseen, ran off at 9 knots.  Intention;  to put the boat on the bottom in 50 meters water to fill up the battery.

23.50   Depth 18 meters still 800 meters from land.  Not a single vessel in the Bay, no patrol vessels, no supply ships, no prams or tug boats.  Perhaps some small fishing boats pulled onto the beach.  The harbor beacons are extinguished, however the houses are not darkened, and there is especially heavy automobile traffic on the island.  I am convinced that the island can be taken with a handful of determined soldiers.  I do not believe that a substantial military crew is present.
In my opinion, as supply place or assembly place for convoys comes not in question especially as off Georgetown there are at most 4 usable anchor locations.  No facilities ashore were see to suggest this purpose.

Identified as Anglo-Saan tanker, DARINA class, around 8100 GRT, fully loaded, only at the forestem can one see a bit of the waterline color.
Intend to blow him up tonight as there might be the possibility to create the suspicion of an auxiliary cruiser.
Tanker lies about 600 meters from land and sways at anchor on course 130-80°.  He lies directly under the newly established harbor battery, 3-4 15 cm cannons at a height of 20 meters above sea level on Munden's Point, that were recognized as new by me.  Work is still going on here, 100-150 meters north of the battery's 2 searchlights were located.  Except for sishing boats, no other vessels can be seen in the harbor.  In Jamestown itself no significant changes.  The coal deposits in the grotto north of the town do not make a significantly increased

After the third detonation flames flicker up, after the 4th one giant tongue of flame.  Nothing more is seen of the tanker, however the water burns with 20-30 meter high flames.  Masts bridge, part of the superstructure travel through the air.
Since the boat first needs to pick up speed in order to turn around, I am afraid of getting into the flames.  Moreover the boat is lit as bright as day, the entire coast, harbor, barracks, and batteries are all illuminated in the red glow.
01.46   Came to course 310°, both AK.  Ran off, putting the flaming sea between me and the 15 cm battery.  There are no shots from land; also from the light battery, that must see me from above and the side, there falls not a single shot.

03.39   Steamer is made out as a very large modern freighter, because range is too great for a stern shot turned for a bow shot.
03.43   Three aimed independent shots from tubes I to III.

All three torpedoes detonate at intervals of seconds in the foreship of the steamer - speed setting was too high at the moment - is completely torn away.  Steamboat makes no attempt to drown.   Steamer stopped, puts out boats, however, transmits "u u u" on 36-meter wave, was immediately interfered with by jamming transmission, thereupon changes to 600 meters and now gives only continuous "vu" "vvv", "vu".

07.07   Despite back AK, submerged collision.
Boat can no longer be held in the heavy seas and comes out.  Then lies surfaced 10 meters beside the steamer.  Thank God the crew goes to the boats instead of to the cannons.  Both cannons at the stern are still secured.  With AK ahead and flooding the negative buoyancy tanks the boat gets under after about 1 minute.
07.22   Surfaced at about range 2000 meters.
Tubes are ready.  Stem is somewhat dented, otherwise no damage from ramming.
Steamer had launched 2 boats, burns amidships and has settled somewhat forward.  Cannons are still secured.

07.59   Heavy detonation very deep, unexplained because the ship was a motorship.  Suspect fuel or explosive cargo.  Large debris field, barrels and oil slick since the fuel oil bunker was hit.  Went to the boats.  2 boats are well equipped. 40 man crew, makes a good impression.
Determined:  steamer "BRADFORD CITY".  Cargo sugar (allegedly) from Sydney for Cardiff.  The great rush to abandon ship the heavy underwater detonation lead to another cargo conclusion.

                                General Remarks on the Patrol.
                               = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

a.) Machinery condition.
Machinery condition was very good due to the extraordinary conservation of the plant by almost continuous economical cruise on one engine.   The resulting opportunity to almost continually overhaul the respective stationary engine with good personnel gives very good dependability.  Only the two cooling water pumps caused difficulties because they were not carefully overhauled from the beginning.  Only the assistance of Ship 16 provided the opportunity to assemble at least one operable pump from the two pumps.  Mechanically there are no objections to stay out half a year with a good reconditioned boat, giving the possibility of a very long-range patrol.
b.) Personnel.
The health status was excellent, the physical stress on the crew was small.  In areas where there are no concerns for surveillance reasons, about letting the engine personnel relax in the fresh air, there exists no time limit for health reasons that would be less than half a year.
c.) Tactics.
After learning of the sinking of the supply tanker in St. Helena and finally after the sinking of the BRADFORD CITY the ordered operational area was substantially depleted because without question traffic was diverted much further to the west.  The attempt to intercept traffic off Lobito (Kasanga-ores, oil wells) and off the Congo (Matadi) were never executed, since in the meantime the re-supply for the planned Cape Town operation caused the discontinuation of operation.   In fact, from 1 November - 1 December. not even one more ship was encountered in the operations area.  In contrast however, within 3 days three vessels were sighted on the route Cape - Parnambuco after the sinking of the PYTHON in a much more southern area (Tanker on 2 December - CLAN MAC BENN on 3 December - sinking of the American "SAGADAHOC" by Mohr on 4 December).  Here without question the track had been detected. The great prospects would have led to success if the limit of the southern operations area had been extended to the south of St. Helena by a further 300 nm.  The area east of St. Helena to the SW African coast is not at all ideal for submarine operations in the eastern part due to the immense heavy swell, present year after year, which makes a submerged attack impossible and surfaced attack very much in question.   To steer at periscope depth here the attack depth of our boats would have to be improved by at least 2 meters.  On average the SE-Trade Wind blows here with wind strength 4-5 and the thrown against the coast wave crests of the "brave west winds" are diverted here in northwest-westerly direction. However south of this Trade Wind border is the real area of operations, which is extremely promising due to its traffic aggregation.  From the Kommandant of "Ship 16" I received insight into a chart a copy of which is attached.  This contained all the B-Dienst reports from the last time in the South Atlantic as well as all courses that came from the logbooks of ships taken or sunk by the Kriegsmarine as a prizes, which provided an excellent indication of traffic frequency.  It would be of immense benefit for boat that operate in such large areas if all B-Dienst reports on

steamers and warship movements were presented in the same manner and would reach the U-boats.  In place of the usual dummy radio messages, it would represent no significant load on the Circuit if they were marked as "Only important for Southern boats".  In the Enclosure the messages on some days are attached as copies from "Ship 16".  Although the visibility outside of the pure SE Trade Wind area is consistently excellent (20000 meters) for operations in these areas a lookout mast of about 20 meters in height would be a huge advantage.  A conveniently mounted seat with support for the binoculars would expand the monitored area by two.  It is very regrettable that due to a tragic event circumstances have come to the boat in the truly promising operations area.
d.) Communications.
It was seen very soon after passing the Equator that the transmitting end connection was limited solely to the night hours, however reception was quite possible every day to approximately 20°S, and south of the limit there was no reception only in the four hours around the noon time (M.O.Z.) [mean local time], but even that was dependent on cloud cover and weather.  Near the coast, reception was much better than farther out. The own Distant Service did not yield any substantial improvement. Experiments with a home-built antenna on the periscope brought no success, however, the lookout mast suggested in the last paragraph used for this purpose would improve daytime reception conditions.  Here also there was a lot good will on the part of the radio personne, who during the critical period with the lifeboats in tow, realized their ambition to get all the Radio Messages from home even by day, so they got everything, while [normally] Short Signals would be received much easier during the regular evening repetition and at good Volume and so [the radio] would [normally] be turned off during the day.
e.) Seamanship.
From the total of 5 supplies or transfers there were 4 in the open sea, which posed an abundance of seamanship problems.  Here, as turned out with the first line, all on-board lines were totally inadequate for these purposes.  A heavy hawser line of approximately 100 meters length is a necessary requirement. It would also be convenient for a supply of fuel from U-boat to U-boat with no limitation on sea conditions.  The 9 meter rubber boat, such as used by PYTHON for torpedo transfer, would raise the limit very much in relation to the seas.  Since the dinghy is wanted only for Baltic Sea purposes anyway and is rarely launched by a U-boat, the storage space for accommodating the 9 meter inflatable boat is also available for use.  On "U-68" it is now appropriately set up to accommodate the boat taken over from PYTHON.

Comments of the Befehlshabers der Unterseeboote

                              on the Kriegstagebuch of "U-68" from 2.8. - 25.12.41.

1.) A well executed patrol with beautiful success.
2.) The meeting in the Taraful bay was ordered by B.d.U. under the assumption that this area was uninhabited. After contrary determination by the boats other meeting arrangements should have been made by agreement.  To anchor immediately off the inhabited coast was thoughtless and wrong.  By this behavior all boats were put in a dangerous situation.
3.) To the conclusions of the Kommandant:
a.) It is also regretted by B.d.U. that among other things with regard to Ship 16, the operations areas of U-boats could not be freely chosen.
b.) The B-reports mainly concerned areas not accessible for U-boats. Moreover, where appropriate, the boats are informed by B.d.U.
